The Social Cooperative Enterprise (Κοιν.Σ.Επ.) “Paths of Greece,” as part of the “Skiathos Heritage Trails” program, conducted a field survey to identify the hiking routes within the “Skiathos Trails” network that are accessible to persons with disabilities.

The methodology used for recording and assessing the accessibility of the hiking routes in Skiathos was based on the “Guide for Accessible Routes in Nature,” compiled by the National Confederation of Disabled People (NCDP).

Some general observations about the hiking routes in Skiathos are as follows:

  • No route is 100% accessible for blind individuals or those with severe visual impairments, as the paths do not have handrails.
  • All routes are accessible for people with hearing impairments; however, some routes incorporate road sections, requiring extra caution.
  • The routes deemed accessible have paths that are wider than 100 cm, have a slope of less than 7%, and feature a stable, smooth surface.
  • The signage on Skiathos trails is standardized and placed strategically at appropriate locations to ensure it is easily noticeable and understood.
